9/1/2020

SACRAMENTO- 916RISE is a youth-led group working to change mental health in Sacramento .The community organization was created by high school students and high school graduates from the class of 2020, who decided to defer from college while the pandemic health crisis continued to affect the world.

Youth decided to join together to create a solution and support Sacramento youth in different ways. They created a program to pair high school seniors with mentors who would help students with the college application process especially with the essay writing and personal statement component.

916Rise is a program run out of citiesRise. citiesRISE is a global platform committed to transforming mental health through local innovation, coalition building, and youth-led action.

Me'Lisa of MJD shared" I remember how fast paced senior year was, and the craziness of applying to college just as colleges were switching over to online applications as opposed to paper applications. Although my parents both finished college, neither of them were familiar with navigating FAFSA online or the personal statement and essays piece. With everyone looking to go to college, the process has become incredibly competitive. Applying to college in the midst of a pandemic will be quite a quest, and so I am excited to help!"

Me'Lisa is a credentialed teacher, and of her favorite courses to teach was AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination. The course was an elective study skills and college preparation class for high school students, with a focus on youth from underrepresented communities and potential first generation students. She is excited to be working to get students into college.
